Diaphragm Birth Control

What is a Diaphragm

The diaphragm is latex, cone-shaped structure which is covered with a spermicide by a woman and then inserted into her vagina before the sexual intercourse. Once put in, the diaphragm completely covers the cervix resulting into prevention of pregnancy. Thus many women resort to this birth control pill to enjoy their sexual life without being pregnant.

This method of birth control works in two ways:

  1. The contraption blocks the opening to the uterus
  2. The applied spermicide stops sperm from moving up to the reproductive organs

You should consult your gynecologist for finding the diaphragm that suits your body the most. $15- $75 is the price range for diaphragm and with proper care and use, the unit should last up to two years.

Advantages of Diaphragm Birth Control

Although the diaphragm does not suit everyone, it has many advantages:

  • Once the diaphragm is inserted into the vagina it is not felt by other partner during the sexual intercourse.
  • Diaphragms can be easily carried from one place to another in your purse or pocket.

Disadvantages of the Diaphragm

As it is said that every coin has two sides the diaphragm though it has many advantages it also has some disadvantages which are as follows:

  • This method does not protect against STDs. It is recommended the diaphragm be used in conjunction with a condom.
  • Diaphragm can be used only for 24 hours otherwise it results into Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
  • Spermicide should be compulsorily be applied by the women’s using this birth control option before it is inserted. Spermicidal cream must be reapplied every two hours during sexual intercourse. This means you'll need plenty of spermicide
  • Some women are not able to insert the unit into the body. They find it difficult.
  • The unit could be pushed out of place during vigorous sexual activity. It is not foolproof.

Side Effects and Effectiveness

If used properly the diaphragm is 94% accurate and effective. This means, 6 out of every 100 users may become pregnant with its use. It's important to note these statistics apply to women who use it perfectly.

Some women may not insert the diaphragm properly. Because of this the effectiveness of this unit comes down to 84%. This means that 16 out of every 100 users may become pregnant with its use. Compared to other forms of birth control, the diaphragm is one of the least effective for preventing pregnancy.

With all forms of birth control, there are side effects to consider. The following side effects have been reported with diaphragm use:

  • Urinary tract infection is frequently experienced by the women wearing this device.
  • Vaginal irritation is also experienced by women.
  • Women wearing the diaphragm will need to visit a doctor if they experience any of the following symptoms:
    • Irregular spotting or bleeding.
  • Pain, redness, or itching in the genital areas
  • Vulva swelling or redness
  • Unusual or foul smelling discharge
  • The sensation of burning during urination
  • A feeling of discomfort when the unit is inserted into the vagina

There are hundreds of viable options available for birth control. Women opting to prevent pregnancy should speak with their doctors to find which birth control option is best for their body.
