Period BleedingMost women experience some bleeding during their periods but heavy period bleeding can be a problem. Unfortunately the average woman experiences heavy period bleeding at least once or twice during her lifetime. Usually period bleeding isn’t anything to worry about. Under normal circumstances menstruating woman has loses only one or two tablespoons of blood during her period. The period should occur about once a month and last about five days. When to Worry About Period BleedingA woman should get worried when her period bleeding becomes very heavy. A good sign of this when a woman has to change her tampon or sanitary pad a lot during her period. Generally if a woman has to change the tampon frequently there’s a problem. If there’s a lot of blood flow or blood flow that just doesn’t stop there can be a real serious problem. Another sign that there’s a problem is the amount of blood starts interfering with a woman’s lifestyle and she can’t engage in normal activities like getting a good night’s sleep. The usual recommendation is that a woman should see her doctor if she has to use more a tampon sanitary pad about once an hour during her period. This is usually a symptom of excessive bleeding. Other signs of a problem are when the period lasts more seven days. This can be a sign of a problem because a period is only supposed to last give days. Another symptom a woman should worry about is getting real tired or fatigued during a period. This can be a sign of anemia which can be a real serious medical condition. Another symptom of anemia is shortness of breath during a period. Any of these symptoms can be a sign of a serious condition called Menorrhagia. If such symptoms persist a woman should probably go and see her doctor. Very heavy period bleeding is usually a sign that there’s something wrong. The doctor should be able to tell what’s causing it. Other BleedingIf a woman starts experiencing vaginal bleeding at times other than her period, she should get worried. Bleeding outside the period can be a sign that there’s something seriously wrong. Vaginal bleeding after menopause is almost always a sign that something is wrong. Periods and bleeding should cease after a woman goes through menopause. Why Women Should Be WorriedWomen should always be worried about heavy period bleeding because it can be a symptom of serious health problems. It can also be a symptom of less serious problems but it will probably take a pelvic exam by a doctor to make sure because there are a wide variety of causes for heavy bleeding. Some of them are serious and some of them are not. Some causes of heavy period bleeding include: hormonal imbalances, polyps, uterine tumors, gland conditions, side effects from IUDs, cancer, ovary problems inherited disorders and some medications. A pelvic exam will enable the doctor to diagnose what is wrong and hopefully prescribe a treatment. |
