Pregnancy Information on Labor And Delivery Complications
The course of pregnancy may be the best experience that any woman or mother would undergo in her lifetime. However, ensuring a healthy and worry-free delivery is a vital part of the pregnancy responsibility that is put on both the mother and father’s shoulders. For most of couples, the lack of information would lead to such complications even in cases where they could have been avoided.
Here are some common complications of labor and delivery:
- Psychological complication
- This is due to the immense anxiousness that the mother experiences during the course of pregnancy especially during the last trimester up to the day of giving birth. Such intense anxieties can lead to secretion of catecholamines which may cause myometrial dysfunction during the actual labor process.
- Secretion of Norephinephrine and epinephrine also may cause to more uncoordinated actions of the mother during labor. Thus, instructions given to her by the medical team cannot be followed to the dot.
- Hypertonic uterine contractions
- This is usually experienced by first-timers. Their contractions are erratic and sometimes ineffective because only a portion of the uterus is involved.
- There may be increase in frequency of the experienced contractions, but the intensity stays the same. This easily noticed when only contractions and pain occur but no cervical dilation occurs or accompanies it.
- Prolonged labor
- This occurs when the child birth process reaches 18 to 24 hours.
- This can be noticed when cervical dilation does not meet proper metrics per hour such as 1.2 cm per hour for first-time mothers and 1.5 cm per hour for multigravidas.
- Rapid delivery
- This kind of complication occurs when the mother is not emotionally and mentally prepared for the childbirth process. This is usually caused by poor preparation of both the medical team and the family of the mother. This can be avoided by providing adequate support and presence before and during the childbirth process.
- The mother here is usually frightened about the unknown outcomes, angry about the situation that she has to face, and feels hopeless or cheated about the current endeavor where no one is there to lend a hand.
- Malpresentation
This is the presenting of the baby in other positions than the vertex presentation, or head going out first. This can be avoided by having thorough and regular check ups.
