Facing the Challenges of Multiple Pregnancy

This is a fact that going through pregnancy is quite a tough thing to do especially at the time of delivery however when it comes to multiple pregnancy, it is quite a challenge. There are a number of factors that should be kept in mind including the practitioner you are going to as he needs to be an expert in dealing the birthing of twins.

There are various other challenges as well which should be discussed in detail.

1. Midwife

There are a lot of women who prefer having a midwife or having the delivery at home. However it is suggested that in case you are having twins, there are chances that you will have to undergo C-section which means you should be at the hospital in the care of the known doctors and nurses. Though if there is no breech at the delivery of the first baby then there are chances that the second baby may also come out naturally but even then there are high chances of caesarean so it is necessary to choose a practitioner over a midwife.

So, it is necessary for the safety of both mother and children to go for the practitioner where twins are involved.

2. Doctor/Practitioner

Once you find out you are having twins, you will have to make an important decision that whether you would like to continue going to the same practitioner or would you like to look for another one? How come you would know that the doctor you are seeing is capable enough to handle your multiple pregnancy or not?

  • Ask if the doctor works as a solo or has a team. Though the doctor can work as a solo but the group is a better option as there are lesser chances of problems.
  • See whether the doctor is having all the modern equipment at his office. You can get to know about this whether he is having ultrasound equipment at his office or not.
  • There are some hospital policies as well which a lot of doctors need to follow, make sure you ask them about these policies.
  • Usually the doctors induce the labor pains at the 38th week for the safety of mother and children and usually C-section is performed at that time, make sure you ask these things beforehand.
  • There are also some babies that are born naturally and they may not require an operation so make sure your doctor try for the natural birth before he chooses to go for the caesarean.

Multiple pregnancies is a tough thing but if you consider all these above factors and be prepared beforehand then it can be handled easily. The tough decision is at the time of selecting the practitioner and if chosen wisely then the rest can be handled by him and the hospital. You need to have confidence on your doctor and if you find the right one, your multiple pregnancy/delivery would become easier.
