Post Adoption Depression

The post adoption depression is not so much we have herd about but it actually exists.

The baby blues:

The post adoption depression is not as uncommon as other thinks. The mother or the birth mother who has just given birth to her child often experiences the baby blues or the postpartum depression. This type of depression is very common in the mothers who have recently given birth to their babies. And the doctors put blame on the hormonal disorder in the woman for such depression.

What actually happens when you did not give birth to the child and you choose to adopt, and are you still in depression? Now you cannot blame it on your hormones, right?

The major reasons behind the post adoption depressions:

In reality it’s not at all very difficult for one to find out the reason for his or her depression. One has spent lot of time in going through the process of the adoption. May be one has battled with the infertility also. In different words one can say or understand that the emotions would be taking a rollercoaster ride. The changes one may face in his or her life after the adoption of your child:

  1. One may face lot of problem in adjusting the new member in your home and life, and the change may include number of sleepless nights and no time left for each other.
  2. People around you may keep on asking the nosy questions about the fertility.
  3. One might have wished for this moment in which he or she enters into the parenthood from so long. One would have investigated or tested him or herself before going for the adoption. Now he or she is holding baby now what they have to invest time or emotions?
  4. The process of adoption is very stressful. One might have invested lot of time, money and emotions in order to get through with this process.
  5. The process of adoption also brings few risks with it. It can bring number of unresolved legal issues, like birth father rights etc. There can be number of unexpected health or medical problems with your child. There can be lot of unexpected adoption expenses too.

The warning signs or symptom of the post adoption depression:

If anyone of you feels that he or she is depressed but does not know the actual reason for their depression, then they must consider the following symptoms.

  1. You start crying very easily and often.
  2. You notice that there is significant change in your weight.
  3. If you feel an exorbitant sum of guiltiness.
  4. If you start feeling worthless.
  5. If you are not interested in the world around you.
  6. And if you are not able to concentrate.

How to deal with the post adoption depression?

If anyone of you feel post adoption depression than following are the few points which can help you in feeling better.

  1. Try to contact other adoptive parents around you.
  2. Try to talk with you friends and your family member about the issue.
