Open Adoption

There are more and more prospective parents who are seeking for the open adoption. This way they can find a child for adoption in their home itself. Sometimes the term open adoption can be misleading. The process of open adoption can very greatly depending upon the manner you handle them.

What is the definition of the open adoption?

Basically the open adoption process means that the documents and every legal notice during the whole process instead or remaining sealed remains open even after the process is over. It may or may not denote that the biological parents and the adopting parents talk about the child. If the adopting parents do choose to communicate then they get the option for how long they want communicate. Either they want to communicate during the adoption process only or throughout the life of the child.

The agencies for open adoption:

One needs to do his or her homework before choosing any adoption agency. The homework may include the finding out what your state laws are regarding the adoption process. As parents or prospective parents prepares for the very first meeting with adoption agency or the adoption facilitator they must make a list of questions. Some questions which one must include are as follows:

  1. What is the fee structure of the procedure or process?
  2. The money taken as process fees is going to be used for?
  3. When can we expect you for the home study?
  4. What should we provide in our portfolio?
  5. What number of successful placements has been done by your agency in the recent years?
  6. Since how long have you been licensed?
  7. What would happen if the birth mother will change her mind?
  8. What would you do if you could not find birth father?
  9. Do we have to keep any contact with the birth parents or not?

The options for the open adoption:

The process of open adoption can be carried out in number of ways. Since almost all birth mothers try to find out a family who are seeking to adopt a child through the portfolios created by the prospective parents, sometimes they also demand to meet with the adopting parents. If both the parties agree then the process of adoption is initiated. In this process the new relations are made and the adopting parents and the birth mother are asked whether they want remain in contact or not.

In some of the cases of the open adoption the adopting parents have to send the yearly updates to the child’s birth mother with the photographs and few comments also if needed. In number of other cases the birth mother stays in contact with the child periodically and at the caution of the close relatives or adoptive parents. But it’s important to make note of that the adoptive parents have complete right and responsibility on the child. So should not allow the birth parents to take away these rights from them.
