Candida

Candida is the kind of skin fungus which leads to fungal infection of the skin. You may even call this monilla or thrush. Some fungus is normally there in the body but when it crosses the limits then it can truly be harmful. These fungi normally thrive in humid and warm places of the body. When there is more of fungus on the body it causes infection and mainly leads to irritation of the skin, itchiness and burning.

Now mothers of infants are often victims of Candida. This is because constant breast feeding chapped and this can lead to Candida infection on the area near the nipples. The infection need not always be of Candida. It may be of bacteria or some such infection. But doctors are still not sure as to how such infections take place. But it is seen that women facing such infections can try out anti-fungal remedies. These remedies will give good results.

Many women do not even realize that they have got Candida or fungal infection. But when there is some sort of discomfort while breastfeeding the baby, you must realize that there is some problem.

Here are some of the most common symptoms of Candida infection on nipples among breastfeeding women:

  • Sore nipples
  • Itching on nipples
  • Redness around nipples
  • Pain on the nipples
  • Flakes around nipple skin
  • Discomfort during breast feeding etc.

It is important to note that Candida infection can be solved even with a course of antibiotic medications. This problem should not be ignored or else it may even affect the baby. Sometimes mother may not realize the intensity of the problem and since he has got thrush there may be thrush even in baby’s mouth.

Normally, if you visit the doctor then in the first instance he will recommend and prescribe a good antifungal cream or lotion. This can be an over the counter cream also. But if even after using this cream for around a week or so, you do not get results then the doctor may prescribe an effective antifungal oral medication. If you want to try out some natural treatment for Candida then eating yogurt during this infection as it has the capacity to prevent Candida growth. Also you must reduce sugar and find alternatives for sugar. Another popular natural remedy for this problem is application of a mixture containing vinegar and water.

Many women ask question as to post infection breastfeeding can be continued or not. Well the answer is that women must continue with breastfeeding or pump out the milk. Keeping milk idle in the breasts will make the situation worse. The only thing is that, till the treatment is going on, one must be careful and take certain preventive measures that will avoid further progression of infection.

If you have ever been victim of this infection then be extra careful and wear comfortable and cotton bras. Keep nipples dry especially after breastfeeding. Wash clothes, towels and undergarments. Keep good hygiene and seek medical help as soon as the symptoms come into picture.
