Bulimia Nervosa

Definition

Bulimia nervosa is known as bulimia asnd it is a type of eating disorder. Some people have bulimia, but eats a lot of food in a short amount of time known as bingeing and then tries to prevent weight gain by purging. Bulimia nervosa such as  eating binges followed by feelings of guilt, humiliation,and sell-deprecation. These feelings may cause the patient to engage in self-induced vomiting,  follow a strict diet, or fast to overcome the effects of the binges. In which electrolyte imbalances such as metabolic alkalosis, and hypokalemia and dehydration can occur, increasing the risk for physical complications. Mostly it occur in adolescence or early adulthood and may also occur simultaneously with anorexia nervosa. Eating disorders are most prevalent in affluent cultural groups and are essentially unknown in cultural groups where poverty and malnutrition are prevalent.

Causes of bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa may be occur due to various causes such as:
  • Family disturbance or conflict
  • Sexual abuse
  • Struggle for control
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias

Symptoms of bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa have various symptoms such as:
  • Binge-eating episode during which she continues eating until abdominal pain, sleep, or the presence of another person interrupts it.
  • Thin and emaciated
  • Peculiar eating habits or rituals
  • Abdominal and epigastric pain
  • Amenorrhea
  • Repetitive vomiting

If you have history of bulimia nervosa that is characterized by episodes of binge eating that may occur up to several times a day. This disorder include hyperactivity, peculiar eating habits or rituals, frequent weighing, and a distorted body image. Abdominal and epigastric pain that may caused by acute gastric dilation. Repetitive vomiting may also cause painless swelling of the salivary glands, hoarseness, throat irritation or lacerations, and dental erosion.

Treatment of Bulimia nervosa

If you have this disease, then you should be use Possible treatment such as:
    • Psychotherapy concentrates on interrupting the binge-purge cycle and helping the patient regain control over her eating behavior.
    • You should be use Inpatient or outpatient treatment, it may  includes behavior modification therapy.
    • You can also use antidepressant drugs, particularly selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors.
    • The patient may also benefit from participation in self-help groups such as Overeaters Anonymous or a drug rehabilitation program if she has a concurrent substance abuse problem.
    • You should be use behavior modification techniques for the treatment of this disease, reward the patient for satisfactory weight gain.
    • For the treatment of this disease, you should provide assertiveness training to help the patient gain control over her behavior and achieve a realistic and positive self-image.
