Anorexia Nervosa

Definition

Anorexia nervosa is sell imposed starvation and it may be occur from  distorted body image. It may be occurs in 1 % to 2% of the female population and in 0.1 % to 0.2% of the male population. The occurrence among males of this disease is rising, but it more prevalent in females. The prognosis varies but improves if the patient is diagnosed early, or if she wants to overcome the disorder and voluntarily seeks help.

Causes of Anorexia nervosa

The exact causes of this disease is unknown. Researchers in neuroendocrinology are seeking a physiologic cause that may cause Anorexia nervosa. Social attitudes that may also cause this disease and it equate slimness with beauty play some role in provoking this disorder; family factors are also implicated.

Symptoms of anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa have various symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Intolerance to cold

  • Loss of fatty tissue
  • Atrophy of breast tissue
  • Bradycardia
  • An emaciated appearance, with skeletal muscle atrophy

  • Dryness or loss of scalp hair

    • Combining aggressive medical management, nutritional counseling, and individual, group or family psychotherapy or behavior modification therapy is the most effective treatment for anorexia nervosa.
