Baby Names

Choosing a name for a baby is lot more difficult and complex task no matter what ever religion you belong to. In India names are selected based on the horoscope calculations, exact time of birth and lot of other things. There is lot of ritual that takes place in India before giving a name to a baby. It is not as simple as opening a book and giving a name to a baby. Lot of people says what is there in name. Actually a name can reveal lot of things like baby's cast religion, and identity to count a few. Lot of non resident living in USA thinks twice before actually keeping their child's name as they have to keep a name which is really short and easily pronounced by the people there. Long names are generally considered as a same.

One should keep short names which are easily pronounced. The name kshitij which is horizon in India language can be well turned to k-shit because people there find it difficult to pronounce Hindi words and so they try to give short form to name. You can imagine the phase through which the child is suffering due to fun made on his name. His self esteem will be lost and he may be weak in keeping social relations. One of my friend’s names was vamshi-shankar-subramanyam. It will take a breath or two to pronounce the full name. Finally he changed the name to Vamshi. One can go for the names which don't have religious implications. Parents may feel offended but then it is far better if you think from baby’s perspective.

Goggling baby’s name on web will offer you load of words which have evolved from Sanskrit and may other form of languages but are not so practical enough in day to day life. Thinking from child's angle give him a name which he will be very happy to carry with rather than giving him some long name for which he will be cursing you.

Parents of certain religion also have some limited options of choosing names due to their community strength. For instance a Hindu parent in India may get a wide variety of name for his child to choose from where as Muslims will have to stick to the names which are proposed in their religious books.

Naming a twin also should be done with utter care. People do prefer rhyming names as shyam-ganshyam, seeta-geeta or debayan-debanjan to name a few. Important thing to notice is that you want to select names that are either unusual or simple – mixing these concepts may create an imbalance between your children. Say you name one of the twin sister as Madison and other as marry, marry will be overshadowed everywhere by her funky sounding sister. This creates a lot of problems in Mary’s life. At times she can even loose her self confidence and that will be a biggest problem. Even parents sometimes try out to cross the names...meaning they give guys name to gal and vice versa.
