Liver Spots

Definition

Liver spots are found in flat brown-black spots that usually occur in sun-exposed areas of the body. They may be called liver spots because they were once thought to be a sign of a malfunctioning liver and they are often dark red or brown, the color of liver Liver spots, also called age spots, lentigines or lentigos, are sharply defined, rounded, brown or black, flat patches of skin. They are unrelated to the liver or liver function. They may measure up to 1 inch in size.

In a very small number of cases, they have been known to obscure the detection of skin cancer.

Causes

Liver spots are the yellowish-brown flat spots that look like large freckles and are thought to be caused by aging, too much sun, impaired liver function, and a dietary or nutritional deficiency. Although age is sometimes blamed for lentigo, older individuals have more cumulative sun exposure therefore are more likely to have lentigo.

Symptoms

The common symptoms are-

  • Shortness of breath
  • Digestive Problems
  • Blood Sugar Problems
  • Nervous System
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • A dry cough that doesn't bring up phlegm (flem), or mucus
  • Wheezing
  • Pain in the middle of your chest that gets worse when you breathe deeply or cough (rare).

Sometimes, a person with sarcoidosis complains of "feeling sick" and may experience fever or weight loss. Sarcoidosis can affect nearly any organ, with the possible exception of the adrenal gland. This disease sometimes causes defoliation in the more humid southeastern states but is not considered a serious disease in Oklahoma.

Liver spots are not medically dangerous. They are permanent skin changes that may affect the cosmetic appearance of the skin.

Treatment

Because they are generally harmless, no treatment for age spots is usually needed. However, they are a cosmetic concern for many women who are concerned with skin care and can lead to emotional disturbances, such as low self-esteem and feelings of self-consciousness.

Active ingredient Gatuline® Whitening (a complex lightening ingredient derived by fermentation of Kojic and Lactic acids with licorice extract) helps fade brown marks, freckles, skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation) and evens out skin tones.

Kojic Acid is also a newly discovered, successful treatment of age spots and other pigment problems. It is not an alpha hydroxy acid, but rather has the same mechanism of action as Hydroquinone. It is derived from a variety of different fungi and organic substances (such as soy and mushrooms). Research shows Kojic Acid to be an effective lightening agent that inhibits the production of melanin (brown pigment). Its low risk of oxidation creates a more stable product, resulting in a longer shelf life.
